BARBERTON WINS
FROM MASSILLON
Wet and Slippery Field Aids
Heavy Match City Team

KESTER STAR OF CONTEST

Big Line Plunger Gives Great Exhibition of Playing
Easily Out Punts Rival
Rudy and Hollinger Also Play Good Games

Massillon high Saturday afternoon received its fourth defeat of the season at the hands of Barberton high by the score of 21 to 3. The local team was outweighed several pounds to the man and the wet and slippery condition of the field greatly aided the heavy match city team. Had the game been played on a dry field the score would have been much lower, as Massillon out played their opponents. Fumbles were numerous and the light Massillon line could do little against their heavier opponents. The Barberton team did not put up a clean brand of football and were penalized several times for using rough tactics.

Barberton scored its first touchdown after one minute of play. Massillon received, McLaughlin getting the ball on the kickoff. On the next play a poor pass to Kester caused him to fumble and a Barberton man recovered it. On the next play Geottge went through the line for a touchdown. Brokaw kicked goal.

Foust made the second touchdown, receiving one of Kester’s punts in midfield. The speedy halfback ran through the entire Massillon team for a touchdown. Brokaw again kicked goal.

The last score was made by Geottge in the third quarter on a line buck. Brokaw kicked goal.

Rider scored Massillon’s only points in the first quarter by a drop from the 20-yard line. The varsity was within striking distance of Barberton’s goal several times, but would either lose the ball on downs or fumble it. In the first quarter the local team made four first downs and carried the ball to the
eight-yard line only to lose it on a fumble.

Kester was Massillon’s shining light. The big fullback by his great playing and kicking can be reckoned the equal of any high school back and punter in the state. He easily out punted his rival and hit the line with terrific force, going through for gains from five to forty yards whenever called upon to carry the ball. On defense he was a tower of strength.

Rudy, his running mate, also put up a great game. These two players have been Massillon’s biggest asset this season. Hollinger, at end, played a strong defensive game and made many brilliant tackles. Smith, at left half, although the smallest member on the squad, went through the heavy Barberton line for several substantial gains. Spuhler, at center, played a good game. “Spook” made one bum pass that was responsible for a Barberton touchdown but he made up for it by his great playing during the rest of the half. Injuries caused his being taken out in the second half.

Rider at quarter ran the team in good style and ran back punts in fine shape. Rogers and Theis at tackles, were stumbling blocks for the Barberton backs. McLaughlin, at end, played a strong defensive game. At guard Spidle, Paroz and Houriet gave a good account of themselves.

Foust played the star game for Barberton. The speedy back would tear through the Massillon line for big gains. Geottge at full, also showed up well at line plunging.

Defeats Local Team Saturday
by Score of 6 to 0

GAME ON MUDDY FIELD

Contest Take Place on Mount’s New Athletic Field
Alliance Scores Touchdown by Air Route
Kester Sick, Unable to Play

On a field that resembled a sea of mud, Massillon high went down to defeat before the fast Alliance team Saturday afternoon by the score of 6 to 0. Alliance scored its touchdown in the third on a long forward pass over the goal line. It traveled from quarterback Kirk to end Baier.

The game was played on Mt. Union’s new athletic field and the rain of the previous night had turned the field into a sea of mud. Fast play was impossible and forward passes did not work on account of the slippery condition of the ball.

Alliance did not expect to win from the local team, but put up a brilliant game and finally romped away with the big end of the score. The varsity was within striking distance of Alliance’s goal several times, but could not carry it over. Much line bucking was done, end runs and trick plays being of no value on the wet field.

The absence of Kester from the line up was greatly felt by the local team. The star fullback was unable to accompany the team on account of illness. His line plunging ability and kicking would have helped Massillon greatly.

MASSILLON HIGH WINS FAST GAME FROM NEW PHILA.

Massillon high added another victory to its list Saturday afternoon, when it defeated New Philadelphia 14 to 0 on the local grounds. New Philadelphia out played the varsity during the first half, using only line bucks. The New Philadelphia team tore up the local line repeatedly for substantial gains. In the second half the tide turned and Massillon asserted itself and played New Philadelphia off its feet.

Hollinger was the shining light in Saturday’s contest, making both touchdowns and playing a strong defensive game. The first score was made in the third quarter when Holly captured a New Philadelphia forward and raced 25 yards for a touchdown. Kester kicked goal. The second touchdown was made in the last quarter on a forward pass from Kester to Hollinger, who ran 45 yards for the down. Kester kicked goal.

Kester still continues to boot the ball. He easily out punted his opponent Saturday. Jake rammed the line with terrific force, being the only player to make any gains through the New Philadelphia line. Kester is also good at throwing the forward pass.

Smith played a strong defensive game, the little whitehead being in on every play. Theis at the other tackle also gave a good exhibition of defensive work. Rider at quarter ran the team in good style. Rogers was off form Saturday, not playing the game he is capable of. It is hoped he will play a better game next Saturday. McLaughlin and Rudy made several good end runs while Spidle, Albright and Houriet at guards and Spuhler at center were in every play.

For New Philadelphia, Wallick and Scott were the shining lights.

The teams were evenly matched in weight and play was kept in the center of the field during the greater part of the game. Massillon gave a good exhibition of open football trying many forwards, several of which worked, the trouble being the inability of the man receiving the pass to hold the ball. Several more touchdowns would have been added had the ball been held.

Rider tried several drops from difficult angles, one of which crossed the bars.

New Philadelphia used straight football, continually ramming the line and making good gains the first half, but the local team took a good brace in the second half and stopped all attempts at piercing the line.

MASSILLON LOSES
HARD FOUGHT GAME TO AKRON CENTRAL
Greatly Outweighed,
Local Team Fights Every Inch of the Way and Holds Akron’s Star Team
to Four Touchdowns

KESTER STAR OF GAME

Big Fullback Plays Best Game of His Career
Jackson Stars for Akron
Massillon’s Line Plays Well But Could Not Stop Battering

Beef! Beef! Beef!

Beef alone won for Akron Central its 25 to 0 victory over M.H.S. Saturday on the high school grounds. Had the two teams been of equal weight, Massillon would have won the game by a comfortable margin, but as it was, the heavy Akron team would batter down the defense of their lighter opponents and stop the plays.

The local team went into the game determined to fight their hardest and fight they did. Greatly outweighed, they held the hard hitting Akronites to four touchdowns. Massillon played an open game. Several attempts to pierce the Akron line were tried, but in most cases no gains were made. Akron was forced to punt often and in the second quarter they were held for three downs on the one-yard line, on the fourth down Rabe went around right end for a touchdown.

A great improvement was shown by the varsity in Saturday’s game. It seemed line a different team; the players were in the game fighting every step. The line played low and the backfield hit its hardest. Akron, confident of winning by a record score, soon found that it would take its best playing to defeat Massillon.

Massillon won the toss and chose to defend the east goal. Hollinger received and advanced the ball to midfield. Kester went through for 8 yards. Rider went around end for 30 yards. Akron took a brace and held Massillon for downs. The ball was kept moving through the middle of the field; Massillon playing a kicking game.

In the second quarter Akron bucked the ball to the three-yard line and Jackson went through for the first touchdown. Goal was missed. Toward the end of the quarter Rabe went around and for the second touchdown.

Jones made the third touchdown in the third quarter. Carderilla kicked goal. Rabe made the fourth.

Massillon’s team work excelled that of Akron and many forward passes were made.

The varsity had a chance to score in the first quarter, with the ball on the 30 yard line. Rider dropped back for a drop kick, but a poor pass by Spuhler caused a fumble.

Fullback Jake was Saturday’s star. Kester put up the game of his life, hitting the line with terrific force. On defense he was everywhere, breaking through and throwing the heavy Akron backs with a thud. He out punted his opponent easily, his kicks averaging 60 yards. Rider, Hollinger, Rogers and all the rest of the team put up a good game.

For Akron, Jackson played the best game, being the hardest player on the team to tackle, it usually taking five or six players to stop him.

Akron Wins by Drop Kick in the Last Quarter
Massillon Outweighed

Akron South’s peppery, fighting team of pigskin chasers inflicted upon M.H.S. the first defeat of the season on the local grounds Saturday afternoon by the score of 3 to 0. Mansfield, Akron South’s fullback, dropped the ball over from the 30 yard line in the last quarter.

Akron outfought and out played Massillon during the whole game. The determination to win and the fighting spirit so characteristic of Massillon teams was entirely lacking in Saturday’s game. As individuals each member of the team played his hardest but the team work exhibited in earlier games was not in evidence. The fact that the local team was outweighed was no reason for the defeat. If any kind of football had been played the victory would have gone to the local team. A decided brace will have to be taken by the varsity if it wishes to defeat Akron Central next Saturday.

The fact that Akron won by only three points was due to the brilliant playing of Captain Rudy. The big back was practically the whole team on defense. The Akron backs found it easy to go through the line but they could not get past Rudy. Rudy was also the best ground gainer. In the first quarter he recovered a fumble and ran 40 yards before being tackled from behind. Kester, Smith and Rogers played strong games. Kester gave a good exhibition of punting, out kicking his opponent by 20 yards.

Newfield, Akron’s center, was largely responsible for the small gains made by the local team. He would break up the play before it was fairly started. Mansfield scored Akron’s points and was a good ground gainer.

Massillon’s line played a poor game, the opposing linemen getting the charge nearly every time. Fumbling was also a great factor in losing. Only one of Massillon’s forward passes were successful.

Game Played on Wet and Muddy Field
Both Teams Evenly Matched,
But Massillon Puts Up Better Class of Sport
KESTER SCORES POINTS

Fumbles and Penalties Frequent
Salem Scores in First Quarter
Outplayed During the Rest of the Game by Massillon Team

Mud and glory covered the gridiron heroes of M.H.S., Saturday, for they defeated Saelm 12 to 6 at Salem on a field that resembled a young lake. Fast play and forward passes were impossible on account of the wet and slippery field. Straight football was used and after the first two downs the players were almost beyond recognition.

Despite the bad weather the game was interesting. Salem started out with a rush, pushing Massillon back to the shadow of the goal posts and with a supreme effort placed the ball over the line for a touchdown. Massillon took a decided brace on the next kickoff. The ball was returned to midfield by Rider and McLaughlin went around end for 30 yards. The ball was advanced to Salem’s ten-yard line where it was fumbled. Massillon was playing stronger and soon had the ball within striking distance when it was penalized for holding. About the middle of the second quarter, Kester went through the line for the first touchdown. He missed goal.

During the second half the varsity rushed Salem off its feet, but when the ball was about to be put over the line, a fumble or penalty interfered.

In the third quarter Paroz blocked a punt which Kester recovered and ran 15 yards for the last touchdown.
Fumbles and penalties were responsible for the low score made by the local team. Connors and Johns seemed to be the whole Salem team, Johnson stopping Massillon runners time after time. The whole Massillon team played an exceptionally good game. On end Rider and Rogers busted up everything that came their way. Theis and Clay at tackles were impregnable.

It was Clay’s first game of football and he certainly put up a fine game. Smith, Houriet and Paroz played good games at guard, Spidle at center proved to be a regular stumbling block for his opponents. Hollinger at quarter, ran the team in great style, picking out the weak spots and hammering that place for good gains. McLaughlin tore around the Salem ends for large gains whenever called upon. Rudy plowed through the line like a demon. Kester at full, scored all the points and was too much for the Salem team to stop.

HIGH SCHOOL WINS
AT UHRICHSVILLE

At last the expected has happened.

Massillon high has won a football game away from home.

Uhrichsville, the victim, was defeated Saturday afternoon by the score of 30 to 0. This is the first football game won away from home in two seasons and great was the rejoicing.

Massillon had little trouble in defeating Uhrichsville. The local team depended upon its backfield to bring victory, while Uhrichsville played an open game, using the forward pass frequently. One pass Rider intercepted and ran 30 yards for a touchdown. Massillon was not forced to punt. Houriet, Rogers and Smith played a strong defensive game. Rudy tore through the opposing line at will and one time broke away from the entire team and ran 90 yards, being tackled from behind on Uhrichsville’s two-yard line.

The scoring started soon after the kickoff. Uhrichsville received and fumbled the ball. Massillon took the ball up the field to the five-yard line, where it was lost on a fumble. Uhrichsville then started a march down the field and was not stopped until the ball was on Massillon’s five-yard line, where the local team held for downs. On the first play, Rudy made his spectacular run and Kester took the ball over for the first touchdown. He kicked goal. Rider dropped one over from the forty-yard line. That ended the first quarter.

In the second quarter Rider intercepted a forward and made the second touchdown. Kester kicked goal.

In the second half, McLaughlin scored the third touchdown by a brilliant run through the Uhrichsville line. Goal was missed. Rudy bucked the last touchdown over. Goal was missed. The Massillon team was handled roughly but the referee refused to penalize. The crowd was also threatening and came upon the field on several occasions.

M.H.S.
SWAMPS DOVER
BY OVERWHELMING SCORE
IN FIRST GAME OF SEASON

Massillon High made its initial appearance upon the gridiron Saturday afternoon, defeating Dover High by the overwhelming score of 67 to 0. Dover was outclassed in all departments of the game and Massillon’s goal was never in danger.

End runs, forward passes and line plunges were all worked successfully by the varsity. The result of three weeks’ hard practice and scrimmage was shown. Massillon worked like a machine, the rapid teamwork and fast playing of the locals completely bewildered their opponents.

McLaughlin scored the first touchdown of the game after five minutes of play. After that it was easy, Massillon not being forced to punt during the entire game, while the best gain that Dover could make was three first downs in succession. Forward passes were worked to good advantage, Rider registering five touchdowns on forwards received from Hollinger, making four of them in succession. End runs were also good ground gainers.

It would be hard to pick the star of the game. Every player did his level best. At the end Rider and Rogers played a brilliant game. Rider caught one forward pass after another and made large gains. Rogers on the other end continually broke down the defense and nailing the man carrying the ball. Rudy and Theis at tackle stopped all attempts at line plunges. Rudy shifted to halfback during the second half, tore up the Dover line for big gains. Paroz and Houriet at guard were in the game every minute, breaking up plays and opening large holes for the backs to plow through. Spidle at center played the game of his life.

Hollinger ran the team in great style, pulling off the right play at the right time and making several good gains himself. The backfield, composed of McLaughlin, Kester, Smith Rudy and Vogt, tore through the Dover line at will. Kester played the stellar role in tackling, backing up the line in fine style and often downing the man in his tracks. McLaughlin’s specialty was in making end runs, it taking usually half of the opposing team to down him. Smith and Vogt hit the line like men weighing 180 pounds instead of only 130.

With the fine showing made in Saturday’s game, the prospects for a championship team this fall are very bright. A large crowd witnessed the opening game. The high school rooters were out in force and with the assistance of cheerleader Johnny Archibold, kept up a continual line of yells during the contest.

MASSILLON BEATEN
BY BARBERTON HIGH
Barberton Piles Up Score of 59 Points

The crippled high school football team was decisively defeated at Barberton, Saturday afternoon by a score of 69 to 0.

Although beaten, the team is said to have put up a good game considering the number of regulars who were out and the experience of some of the local men. With four members of the regular eleven out, the team work was crippled and the line up had to be shifted in all manner of shapes. The Barberton school has a fast team this season, practically all of the men having played together for several years. Several of the Massillon players, on the other hand, had never participated in a full game of any consequence.

Miller, Stern, Baer and Hollinger were out of the game and early in the game, “Whitey” Smith, Massillon’s premier weight man, had to be taken out on account of injuries. Although the score was large the local team was not discourage over the showing. The game with Barberton ends the season.

MILLER AND RUDY STAR
Massillon’s Two Halfbacks Play Brilliant Game
Canton Line Always Held at Critical Moments
Both Teams Use Forward to Good Advantage.

In a hard played and interesting game, Canton high took Massillon high into camp Saturday afternoon by a score of 19 to 0. Although the local team displayed some of the dash and snap that was so evident in the Shaw high game something seemed to be lacking that gives a team vim and life.

However, the Massillon team played hard and gave Canton a mighty tussle but the local eleven were clearly outplayed. Massillon probably gained as many yards as her opponents until they got within 20 yards of the coveted line when they would be held for downs and the ball would change hands. The Massillon backfield put up the star game and pulled off many long gains but when the ball was worked near the Canton goal, the line would fail to hold and the man carrying the ball was often thrown back for a loss. Massillon excelled in open work and several spectacular forward passes were pulled off for gains of 20, 30 and 40 yards.

Although the whole team played a good game several stood out as putting up the best work. Miller, the speedy Massillon captain, played his usual brilliant game, carrying the ball for good gains by his twisting, dodging and fleetness. Many times on the defense he nailed the runner in his tracks, cutting the gains. Rudy the dashing halfback, was in the game over his head and his terrific line smashes brought the spectators to their feet many times. He also handled several forward passes cleverly, gaining forty yards on one of them. Hollinger ran the team well, handled punts in great style and at one time, by a clean tackle, saved the Massillon team from being scored on another time. Kester played a hard game but was unable to do his best work on account of a charley horse and Stern, the speedy little end, was suffering from the same injury which greatly impaired his speed, but he put up a plucky game in spite of it.

In one respect Massillon was equal if not better than the Canton school. The Massillon rooters deserve much credit for their good work. Under the leadership of Henrich and Baxter they kept up a continual din until the very end of the game and never once did they stop rooting even though the score kept piling up against their team, they never allowed their support to fail. Nearly 500 local fans accompanied the team.
THEGAME
Canton received. Canton started up the field but Rider got possession of the ball on a fumble. Canton regained the ball in the same manner and started up the field, making first downs regularly. Hollinger brought down a Canton runner, cutting off a touchdown. Canton continued down the field and placed the ball on the one-foot line but the locals took a brace and held them for downs. Massillon punted out of danger. Miller intercepted a Canton forward and the Massillon team started to march up the field, but on the 30-yard line were held for downs and the ball went to Canton . Rider speared a Canton forward and the first quarter ended with the ball about in the middle of the field.

Stern got a pretty forward from Hollinger that netted 30 yards. On the next down Massillon lost the ball. Canton was forced to punt and after Massillon lost the ball on a fumble, Canton again punted. Massillon was held and punted. Soon after Canton scored their first touchdown when Cholley went through Massillon’s right wing and sprinted 68 yards. Flickinger missed goal. Score 6 to 0.

Massillon received and Rudy returned the ball 20 yards. After Hollinger got 20 yards on a forward the first half ended.
SECOND HALF

Massillon lost the ball on downs. Mooth raced forty yards on a forward pass before being downed. Luntz carried the ball to the six-inch line and on the next down he carried it over. Goal was missed. Score 12 to 0.

Massillon received. Rudy gained 40 yards on a pretty forward. Canton captured a Massillon forward but Rider recovered the ball on a fumble. The quarter ended with the ball in Massillon’s possession.

Canton worked the ball into Massillon territory but lost the ball on downs and Massillon kicked. Rudy got a Canton fumble but Massillon was held for downs and forced to punt. The punt was blocked and Wise grabbed the ball and went for a touchdown. Goal was kicked. Score 19 to 0. After several more minutes of play the game ended.
