AKRON SOUTH GIVES M.H.S.
ITS FIRST DEFEAT OF SEASON

Rubber City Team Exhibits a Peppery, Fighting Brand of Football
Local Team Out played by Opponents
and Fail to Score
RUDY STAR OF GAME

Captain of the Varsity Plays Brilliant Game
Akron Wins by Drop Kick in the Last Quarter
Massillon Outweighed

Akron South’s peppery, fighting team of pigskin chasers inflicted upon M.H.S. the first defeat of the season on the local grounds Saturday afternoon by the score of 3 to 0. Mansfield, Akron South’s fullback, dropped the ball over from the 30 yard line in the last quarter.

Akron outfought and out played Massillon during the whole game. The determination to win and the fighting spirit so characteristic of Massillon teams was entirely lacking in Saturday’s game. As individuals each member of the team played his hardest but the team work exhibited in earlier games was not in evidence. The fact that the local team was outweighed was no reason for the defeat. If any kind of football had been played the victory would have gone to the local team. A decided brace will have to be taken by the varsity if it wishes to defeat Akron Central next Saturday.

The fact that Akron won by only three points was due to the brilliant playing of Captain Rudy. The big back was practically the whole team on defense. The Akron backs found it easy to go through the line but they could not get past Rudy. Rudy was also the best ground gainer. In the first quarter he recovered a fumble and ran 40 yards before being tackled from behind. Kester, Smith and Rogers played strong games. Kester gave a good exhibition of punting, out kicking his opponent by 20 yards.

Newfield, Akron’s center, was largely responsible for the small gains made by the local team. He would break up the play before it was fairly started. Mansfield scored Akron’s points and was a good ground gainer.

Massillon’s line played a poor game, the opposing linemen getting the charge nearly every time. Fumbling was also a great factor in losing. Only one of Massillon’s forward passes were successful.

1913: Massillon 12, Salem 6

SALEM TROUNCED
BY HIGH SCHOOL TEAM, SATURDAY
Game Played on Wet and Muddy Field
Both Teams Evenly Matched,
But Massillon Puts Up Better Class of Sport
KESTER SCORES POINTS

Fumbles and Penalties Frequent
Salem Scores in First Quarter
Outplayed During the Rest of the Game by Massillon Team

Mud and glory covered the gridiron heroes of M.H.S., Saturday, for they defeated Saelm 12 to 6 at Salem on a field that resembled a young lake. Fast play and forward passes were impossible on account of the wet and slippery field. Straight football was used and after the first two downs the players were almost beyond recognition.

Despite the bad weather the game was interesting. Salem started out with a rush, pushing Massillon back to the shadow of the goal posts and with a supreme effort placed the ball over the line for a touchdown. Massillon took a decided brace on the next kickoff. The ball was returned to midfield by Rider and McLaughlin went around end for 30 yards. The ball was advanced to Salem’s ten-yard line where it was fumbled. Massillon was playing stronger and soon had the ball within striking distance when it was penalized for holding. About the middle of the second quarter, Kester went through the line for the first touchdown. He missed goal.

During the second half the varsity rushed Salem off its feet, but when the ball was about to be put over the line, a fumble or penalty interfered.

In the third quarter Paroz blocked a punt which Kester recovered and ran 15 yards for the last touchdown.
Fumbles and penalties were responsible for the low score made by the local team. Connors and Johns seemed to be the whole Salem team, Johnson stopping Massillon runners time after time. The whole Massillon team played an exceptionally good game. On end Rider and Rogers busted up everything that came their way. Theis and Clay at tackles were impregnable.

It was Clay’s first game of football and he certainly put up a fine game. Smith, Houriet and Paroz played good games at guard, Spidle at center proved to be a regular stumbling block for his opponents. Hollinger at quarter, ran the team in great style, picking out the weak spots and hammering that place for good gains. McLaughlin tore around the Salem ends for large gains whenever called upon. Rudy plowed through the line like a demon. Kester at full, scored all the points and was too much for the Salem team to stop.

1913: Massillon 30, Uhrichsville 0

HIGH SCHOOL WINS
AT UHRICHSVILLE

At last the expected has happened.

Massillon high has won a football game away from home.

Uhrichsville, the victim, was defeated Saturday afternoon by the score of 30 to 0. This is the first football game won away from home in two seasons and great was the rejoicing.

Massillon had little trouble in defeating Uhrichsville. The local team depended upon its backfield to bring victory, while Uhrichsville played an open game, using the forward pass frequently. One pass Rider intercepted and ran 30 yards for a touchdown. Massillon was not forced to punt. Houriet, Rogers and Smith played a strong defensive game. Rudy tore through the opposing line at will and one time broke away from the entire team and ran 90 yards, being tackled from behind on Uhrichsville’s two-yard line.

The scoring started soon after the kickoff. Uhrichsville received and fumbled the ball. Massillon took the ball up the field to the five-yard line, where it was lost on a fumble. Uhrichsville then started a march down the field and was not stopped until the ball was on Massillon’s five-yard line, where the local team held for downs. On the first play, Rudy made his spectacular run and Kester took the ball over for the first touchdown. He kicked goal. Rider dropped one over from the forty-yard line. That ended the first quarter.

In the second quarter Rider intercepted a forward and made the second touchdown. Kester kicked goal.

In the second half, McLaughlin scored the third touchdown by a brilliant run through the Uhrichsville line. Goal was missed. Rudy bucked the last touchdown over. Goal was missed. The Massillon team was handled roughly but the referee refused to penalize. The crowd was also threatening and came upon the field on several occasions.

1913: Massillon 67, Dover 0

M.H.S.
SWAMPS DOVER
BY OVERWHELMING SCORE
IN FIRST GAME OF SEASON

Massillon High made its initial appearance upon the gridiron Saturday afternoon, defeating Dover High by the overwhelming score of 67 to 0. Dover was outclassed in all departments of the game and Massillon’s goal was never in danger.

End runs, forward passes and line plunges were all worked successfully by the varsity. The result of three weeks’ hard practice and scrimmage was shown. Massillon worked like a machine, the rapid teamwork and fast playing of the locals completely bewildered their opponents.

McLaughlin scored the first touchdown of the game after five minutes of play. After that it was easy, Massillon not being forced to punt during the entire game, while the best gain that Dover could make was three first downs in succession. Forward passes were worked to good advantage, Rider registering five touchdowns on forwards received from Hollinger, making four of them in succession. End runs were also good ground gainers.

It would be hard to pick the star of the game. Every player did his level best. At the end Rider and Rogers played a brilliant game. Rider caught one forward pass after another and made large gains. Rogers on the other end continually broke down the defense and nailing the man carrying the ball. Rudy and Theis at tackle stopped all attempts at line plunges. Rudy shifted to halfback during the second half, tore up the Dover line for big gains. Paroz and Houriet at guard were in the game every minute, breaking up plays and opening large holes for the backs to plow through. Spidle at center played the game of his life.

Hollinger ran the team in great style, pulling off the right play at the right time and making several good gains himself. The backfield, composed of McLaughlin, Kester, Smith Rudy and Vogt, tore through the Dover line at will. Kester played the stellar role in tackling, backing up the line in fine style and often downing the man in his tracks. McLaughlin’s specialty was in making end runs, it taking usually half of the opposing team to down him. Smith and Vogt hit the line like men weighing 180 pounds instead of only 130.

With the fine showing made in Saturday’s game, the prospects for a championship team this fall are very bright. A large crowd witnessed the opening game. The high school rooters were out in force and with the assistance of cheerleader Johnny Archibold, kept up a continual line of yells during the contest.

MASSILLON BEATEN
BY BARBERTON HIGH
Barberton Piles Up Score of 59 Points

The crippled high school football team was decisively defeated at Barberton, Saturday afternoon by a score of 69 to 0.

Although beaten, the team is said to have put up a good game considering the number of regulars who were out and the experience of some of the local men. With four members of the regular eleven out, the team work was crippled and the line up had to be shifted in all manner of shapes. The Barberton school has a fast team this season, practically all of the men having played together for several years. Several of the Massillon players, on the other hand, had never participated in a full game of any consequence.

Miller, Stern, Baer and Hollinger were out of the game and early in the game, “Whitey” Smith, Massillon’s premier weight man, had to be taken out on account of injuries. Although the score was large the local team was not discourage over the showing. The game with Barberton ends the season.

MASSILLON
DOWNED BY CANTON HIGH SCORE 19 TO 0
Locals Outplayed Throughout Game
MILLER AND RUDY STAR
Massillon’s Two Halfbacks Play Brilliant Game
Canton Line Always Held at Critical Moments
Both Teams Use Forward to Good Advantage.

In a hard played and interesting game, Canton high took Massillon high into camp Saturday afternoon by a score of 19 to 0. Although the local team displayed some of the dash and snap that was so evident in the Shaw high game something seemed to be lacking that gives a team vim and life.

However, the Massillon team played hard and gave Canton a mighty tussle but the local eleven were clearly outplayed. Massillon probably gained as many yards as her opponents until they got within 20 yards of the coveted line when they would be held for downs and the ball would change hands. The Massillon backfield put up the star game and pulled off many long gains but when the ball was worked near the Canton goal, the line would fail to hold and the man carrying the ball was often thrown back for a loss. Massillon excelled in open work and several spectacular forward passes were pulled off for gains of 20, 30 and 40 yards.

Although the whole team played a good game several stood out as putting up the best work. Miller, the speedy Massillon captain, played his usual brilliant game, carrying the ball for good gains by his twisting, dodging and fleetness. Many times on the defense he nailed the runner in his tracks, cutting the gains. Rudy the dashing halfback, was in the game over his head and his terrific line smashes brought the spectators to their feet many times. He also handled several forward passes cleverly, gaining forty yards on one of them. Hollinger ran the team well, handled punts in great style and at one time, by a clean tackle, saved the Massillon team from being scored on another time. Kester played a hard game but was unable to do his best work on account of a charley horse and Stern, the speedy little end, was suffering from the same injury which greatly impaired his speed, but he put up a plucky game in spite of it.

In one respect Massillon was equal if not better than the Canton school. The Massillon rooters deserve much credit for their good work. Under the leadership of Henrich and Baxter they kept up a continual din until the very end of the game and never once did they stop rooting even though the score kept piling up against their team, they never allowed their support to fail. Nearly 500 local fans accompanied the team.
THEGAME
Canton received. Canton started up the field but Rider got possession of the ball on a fumble. Canton regained the ball in the same manner and started up the field, making first downs regularly. Hollinger brought down a Canton runner, cutting off a touchdown. Canton continued down the field and placed the ball on the one-foot line but the locals took a brace and held them for downs. Massillon punted out of danger. Miller intercepted a Canton forward and the Massillon team started to march up the field, but on the 30-yard line were held for downs and the ball went to Canton . Rider speared a Canton forward and the first quarter ended with the ball about in the middle of the field.

Stern got a pretty forward from Hollinger that netted 30 yards. On the next down Massillon lost the ball. Canton was forced to punt and after Massillon lost the ball on a fumble, Canton again punted. Massillon was held and punted. Soon after Canton scored their first touchdown when Cholley went through Massillon’s right wing and sprinted 68 yards. Flickinger missed goal. Score 6 to 0.

Massillon received and Rudy returned the ball 20 yards. After Hollinger got 20 yards on a forward the first half ended.
SECOND HALF
Canton kicked and Kester returned 15 yards. Massillon went about 30 yards and lost the ball on a fumble. Hollinger got a Canton forward and Rudy gained 30 yards on a forward from Hollinger. Massillon lost the ball on downs. Mooth raced forty yards on a forward pass before being downed. Luntz carried the ball to the six-inch line and on the next down he carried it over. Goal was missed. Score 12 to 0.

Massillon received. Rudy gained 40 yards on a pretty forward. Canton captured a Massillon forward but Rider recovered the ball on a fumble. The quarter ended with the ball in Massillon’s possession.

Canton worked the ball into Massillon territory but lost the ball on downs and Massillon kicked. Rudy got a Canton fumble but Massillon was held for downs and forced to punt. The punt was blocked and Wise grabbed the ball and went for a touchdown. Goal was kicked. Score 19 to 0. After several more minutes of play the game ended.

In an interesting game that abounded with open playing, Massillon high lost to New Philadelphia high Saturday afternoon at New Philadelphia, by a score of 13 to 6. Massillon made its only touchdown in the last three minutes of play, when the team was playing sensational ball and had there been a few more minutes the score might have been a tie.

The Massillon team put up a poor exhibition of football. The New Philadelphia team was clearly inferior to the local squad but the playing was lifeless and the individual players acted as though afraid of being injured. The local line did not hold and at times the backs were tackled before they would get started.

Rudy made the only touchdown for Massillon, when he plunged through the line after the ball had been worked into New Philadelphia territory on a series of line bucks.

Limbach and Becker Play Star Games For Massillon

In a somewhat slow and uninteresting game, Akron Central high defeated Massillon high at Akron, Saturday afternoon by a score of 29 to 0. The Massillon team was outweighed about 20 pounds to the man and the heavy and speedy Akron backs tore off long runs, four of them resulting in touchdowns. The locals did not put up the brand of football they have been showing in past games. The playing was somewhat ragged and although several of the locals would break through the heavy Akron line on every down, yet the man carrying the ball was not tackled. The Massillon eleven put up a hard game, but had they been at their best they would probably have lost, but by a much smaller score. Akron’s goal line was never in danger. For Massillon, Limbach and Becker put up the most consistent games. Becker breaking through the line time and time again and tackling the runner and Limback tackling all over the field, bringing the heavy backs down with a thump. Much open football was played and many forward passes tried, but they were usually broken up.

In the beginning it looked like anybody’s game, but after about eight minutes of play Akron rushed the ball into Massillon territory and Swinehart carried it over for the first touchdown. Crisp kicked goal.

In the second quarter Swinehart again scored for his team, circling right end for a 30 yard run and a touchdown. Crisp kicked goal.

Swinehart again played the hero in the first half and pulled off another long run for a touchdown. Goal was missed. The score at the end of the first half was 20 to 0.

In the second half Arbogast scored another touchdown and Owen booted the ball between the bars for a field goal. This ended the scoring and soon after the game ended. One of the features of the game was the rooting of the loyal Massillon supporters. About a dozen stood on the side line and kept up their yelling throughout the game.

SCORE 34 TO 12
Game Was Somewhat Slow
and Loosely Played
MASSILLON NOT IN FORM

Straight Line Bucks and Clever Forward Pass
Massillon Backfield Plays Good Game
Getz, Miller and Stern Stars

In a somewhat slow and loosely played game, Massillon high defeated Alliance high, Saturday afternoon, on the high school grounds, by a score of 34 to 12.

The Massillon team did not show the snap and aggressiveness so characteristic in previous games. The line especially was rather loose and did not display the dash that in former games has opened big holes in the opposing line. The backfield, however, played its usual fast game. The Alliance team scored twice on the locals, once by straight line bucks and again by a clever forward pass. Miller, as usual, carried the ball for some of Massillon’s longest gains.

Kester played probably the best game he has put up this season. He tore up the Alliance line time after time for gains of 10 and 15 yards. Stern, who was out of last Saturday’s game, was again at his position at end and this speedy little player put up a great game. For Alliance, Geltz and Dennison were the bright spots. Geltz carried the ball for good gains and he is a past master at hurling the forward pass. Dennison received a long forward and scored a touchdown and he made several good gains by receiving passes. Both teams used the forward pass with good results.
THE GAME
Massillon received and on the first down Limbach received a pretty forward. Massillon was held for downs and Kester booted the ball far down the field and it rolled over the line where an Alliance player recovered it, but he was tackled in his tracks, Massillon scoring a safety. Alliance punted from the 20-yard line but, on the first down, the ball was fumbled and Alliance regained possession of it. Alliance was forced to punt and Massillon with the ball in its possession started a march down the field by bucking the line, Hollinger crossing for a touchdown. Kester kicked goal.
Score 9 to 0.
Massillon received but lost the ball on a forward pass. Alliance pulled off a pretty forward and then by hitting the line the ball was finally pushed over. The kick out failed.
Score 9 to 6.

Massillon received and Miller returned the ball 45 yards. Alliance got the ball on downs and was soon forced to punt. Massillon started up the field and the quarter ended with the ball on Alliance’s 8-yard line. At the beginning of the second quarter Kester went through the line for a touchdown. Kester missed goal.
Score 15 to 6.
Massillon received and Rudy returned the ball 20 yards and Stern tore off 30 more on a forward pass. Alliance got the ball on a fumble. Geltz pulled off a long run to the middle of the field but a minute later Alliance was forced to punt. Massillon tried a goal from placement which failed. Alliance was forced to punt and Massillon did the same. The half ended with the ball in the middle of the field.
SECOND HALF
Limbach replaced Rudy at right half, Johns taking Limbach’s end. Alliance received. They worked several forwards and finally a long forward to Dennison who was playing near the right edge of the field scored another touchdown. This was one of the cleverest plays pulled off on the local grounds this year. Goal was missed.
Score 15 to 12.
Massillon received but lost the ball on a fumble. Alliance punted and Limbach received. Massillon now began to plunge through the Alliance line and finally Hollinger went through left guard for a touchdown. Attempt at goal failed.
Score 21 to 13.
Massillon received and Stern returned the ball 20 yards before being downed. Again the locals began a steady march up the field, the backfield tearing big holes in the Alliance line. The ball was finally placed on the three-yard line and Kester put it over. Kester kicked goal.
Score 28 to 12.
Alliance received and the player was tackled behind the line for a touchdown. Alliance put the ball in the play on the 20-yard line and on the first down. Hollinger got an Alliance forward. The third quarter ended with the ball on Alliance’s 13-yard line. Miller went through the Alliance line on the first play for a touchdown. The kick out failed.
Score 34 to 12.
Alliance received and was forced to punt. Massillon also punted but regained possession of the ball on downs. The local backs again carried the ball down the field to the 3-yard line, but the Alliance team took a decided brace and held Massillon for downs. Alliance punted the ball out of danger and regained it when Hollinger fumbled. Alliance again punted and Johns fumbled the ball, Limbach failing on it. Alliance held Massillon for downs when the final whistle blew, ending the game.

1912: Massillon 6, Cleveland Shaw 0

MASSILLON WINS FROM SHAW HIGH SCORE, 6 TO 0

Game Was Fiercely Contested At All Times 55 YARD RUN BY MILLER
Massillon Captain Shakes Off Five Tacklers and Goes For a Touchdown Teams Were Evenly Matched and Neither Line Was In Danger

In one of the fastest and most hotly contested games ever played on the local grounds, Massillon high took Shaw high, of Cleveland, into camp, Saturday afternoon by a score of 6 to 0.
MILLER IS HERO
The only touchdown of the game was made when Miller, the speedy Massillon captain and half back, went through right tackle, shaking off five Shaw tacklers by his great twisting, and dodging and raced 55 yards to the goal line. His run was undoubtedly one of the greatest ever pulled off in the history of the school and Miller’s name will go down in the annuals of high school athletics as the man who scored a victory against Shaw.

Not only did Miller put up the greatest game of his career, but the entire team played as it never had played before. Had there been one weak spot in the local line-up, the game would probably have been lost. The line played hard and low and when Shaw had rushed the ball to the 10 yard line it held the heavy Shaw backs for three successive downs and Wells got the ball on the next down on a fumble. The backfield played a great game and Miller, Rudy and Kester kept ramming the opposite line like battering rams. Hollinger ran the team like a veteran and handled punts in good shape.
TEAMS EVENLY MATCHED
The two teams were about as evenly matched as two teams could be. Neither time was either goal line in immediate danger and the leather was kept moving to and fro across the middle of the field. Both teams tried forwards a number of times only to have them broken up by the opposing team. Each got away successfully with about two. For Shaw, Goss played the star game and this stocky end pulled off some good gains besides breaking up many Massillon formations and spilling the man with the ball.
ROOTERS ARE OUT
The students were out in full force and under the direction of their leaders, Henrich and Becker, they supported the team to the full capacity of their lungs, which was by no means small. When Miller cut loose for a touchdown bedlam broke loose among the local supporters and the air was full of pennants, hats and noise. Old men forgot their age and danced up and down in their glee. The game was clean and very little time was taken out for injured players.
THE GAME
Massillon received and Stern returned the ball 20 yards. Massillon started down the field with the ball, but after a 30-yard march they were forced to kick. Shaw advanced the ball to the 40-yard line and kicked. Massillon lost the ball on downs but soon after Miller regained it by intercepting a forward pass. Massillon was forced to punt. Shaw advanced the ball to the middle of the field and the quarter ended.

Shaw punted and after a forward pass failed Kester booted the ball 40 yards. Shaw made 12 yards on a fumble and advanced steadily down the field but Massillon held and Shaw punted 35 yards. Massillon began hammering the left side of the line and after making several good gains were forced to punt, Danforth returning the ball 25 yards before being downed. Shaw was held and kicked when the first half ended with the ball on Massillon’s eight yard line and in possession of the locals.
SECOND HALF
Shaw received and after making 15 yards, punted. On the next down Miller ripped through right tackle for a run of 55 yards and a touchdown. Kester missed goal.

Shaw received. They advanced the ball 35 yards and punted the ball over the line. The ball was put in play on the 20 yard line and after making their yards in the first four downs, Massillon was forced to punt. Shaw returned the ball 15 yards and lost it on downs and Massillon did the same. Shaw advanced the ball to the 22 yard line when the third quarter ended.

Shaw was held and forced to kick the ball going over the line. Massillon lined up for scrimmage on the 20 yard line. Massillon advanced the ball nine yards and was forced to kick and Kester lifted the pigskin 35 yards. With the ball in their possession the Shaw players began to advance the ball regularly, making their distance in the required downs. Steadily the ball was carried toward the Massillon goal line, the local team disputing every inch of the way. Finally the ball was worked up to the 10-yard line when the Massillon team took a decided brace. On the first down they were held in their tracks. The second down gained nothing for them, and on the third they met with the same fate. On the fourth the ball was fumbled and Wells pounced upon it. Massillon started down the field but the final whistle blew ending the game.

In Saturday’s game one Massillon man played his last game for the school and another played his first. Wells wound up his football career with Massillon in a blaze of glory. Never did he play a better game and it was a fitting end to the work of so good a player. Wells will leave the city this week for Loranin. Eckstine was the player who played his first game for the school. He is a big fellow and although his first game was the hardest, yet he handled his position in great shape and showed that he was made of the proper stuff.
