BARBERTON WINS
FROM MASSILLON
Wet and Slippery Field Aids
Heavy Match City Team

KESTER STAR OF CONTEST

Big Line Plunger Gives Great Exhibition of Playing
Easily Out Punts Rival
Rudy and Hollinger Also Play Good Games

Massillon high Saturday afternoon received its fourth defeat of the season at the hands of Barberton high by the score of 21 to 3. The local team was outweighed several pounds to the man and the wet and slippery condition of the field greatly aided the heavy match city team. Had the game been played on a dry field the score would have been much lower, as Massillon out played their opponents. Fumbles were numerous and the light Massillon line could do little against their heavier opponents. The Barberton team did not put up a clean brand of football and were penalized several times for using rough tactics.

Barberton scored its first touchdown after one minute of play. Massillon received, McLaughlin getting the ball on the kickoff. On the next play a poor pass to Kester caused him to fumble and a Barberton man recovered it. On the next play Geottge went through the line for a touchdown. Brokaw kicked goal.

Foust made the second touchdown, receiving one of Kester’s punts in midfield. The speedy halfback ran through the entire Massillon team for a touchdown. Brokaw again kicked goal.

The last score was made by Geottge in the third quarter on a line buck. Brokaw kicked goal.

Rider scored Massillon’s only points in the first quarter by a drop from the 20-yard line. The varsity was within striking distance of Barberton’s goal several times, but would either lose the ball on downs or fumble it. In the first quarter the local team made four first downs and carried the ball to the
eight-yard line only to lose it on a fumble.

Kester was Massillon’s shining light. The big fullback by his great playing and kicking can be reckoned the equal of any high school back and punter in the state. He easily out punted his rival and hit the line with terrific force, going through for gains from five to forty yards whenever called upon to carry the ball. On defense he was a tower of strength.

Rudy, his running mate, also put up a great game. These two players have been Massillon’s biggest asset this season. Hollinger, at end, played a strong defensive game and made many brilliant tackles. Smith, at left half, although the smallest member on the squad, went through the heavy Barberton line for several substantial gains. Spuhler, at center, played a good game. “Spook” made one bum pass that was responsible for a Barberton touchdown but he made up for it by his great playing during the rest of the half. Injuries caused his being taken out in the second half.

Rider at quarter ran the team in good style and ran back punts in fine shape. Rogers and Theis at tackles, were stumbling blocks for the Barberton backs. McLaughlin, at end, played a strong defensive game. At guard Spidle, Paroz and Houriet gave a good account of themselves.

Foust played the star game for Barberton. The speedy back would tear through the Massillon line for big gains. Geottge at full, also showed up well at line plunging.

M.H.S. WINS SECOND GAME
Defeated Barberton by Good Score, Saturday Afternoon
MILLER AND BALTZLY STARRED They Played Fast Ball, as Did the Entire Team Visitors Resorted to Trick of Playing Old 1909 Football New Plays Were Worked Out for Massillon

The Massillon high school is celebrating another important victory as the result of the fast, scientific playing against Barberton high school on the local grounds Saturday afternoon.

Barberton resorted almost entirely to animal strength, fearing to try quick plays or passes, for the Massillon ends were ever on the alert. Only once did the visitors make any material gain on one of their own trick plays which was nothing more than an ordinary pass, manufactured in 1909 and laid up on the shelf until Saturday. The entire game showed Massillon’s superior football training.

Miller, left halfback for Massillon high, could be seen in the thickest of every play and was always an important factor. Time and again he broke through the Barberton line and threw off tackling opponents. Baltzly, too did the same thing time after time and found non-breakable interference whenever opportunity presented itself.
THE GAME
Massillon kicked to Barberton. The ball was recovered by Massillon on a fumble. Heyman and Miller alternated at following strong interference for good gains. Kester carried the ball and was downed after five yards. Heyman broke through the line untouched and carried the ball about five yards. Heyman, Kester and then Heyman bucked the line for material gains.

Massillon fumbled to Barberton but unable to make yards they were forced to punt, Arther receiving. The ball was passed to both Miller and Heyman on different plays, gains being made each time. Arther fumbled, recovered the ball and on the next down Heyman received a fake pass and gained around end. On the next and final down to this section of the game, Heyman made a touchdown on a forward pass. Goal was kicked.

Barberton kicked to Gester, who carried the ball near the center of the field. Massillon punted. Arther downed the runner almost before he had received the ball. Rider, too, made a quick tackle. Here it was that Barberton made its only material gain through Massillon’s line and this time it was for only about ten yards.

Barberton punted but Baer, a new man on the local team, blocked the punt. The ball was recovered by Kester. Arther and Kester took turns bucking the line and making gains. Heyman and Miller each made yards on various plays. Arther and Heyman gained on plays. Miller and Arther followed suit and made yards for the team. Kester on what is called “chew the rag” play, scored the second touchdown. Try at goal failed, the angle being too great.

Kester again received from Barberton and advanced the ball to the forty yard line. Heyman made a long gain around left end. Massillon punted and time was called for the first quarter. Score: Massillon 11; Barberton 0.

The ball was put in play at the opposite end of the field from the last quarter, Barberton gaining about twenty yards. Kester recovered the ball when Foust fumbled. Massillon fumbled, Barberton recovering. Rowe broke away from the entire crowd and was called for a touchdown when Stoner made a pretty tackle in downing him on the fifteen yard line. Chismell scored on a forward. Goal was kicked.

Heyman received and advanced the ball fifteen yards and on the next play duplicated his feat. Miller, Kester and Heyman again made good gains. Rudy made an attempt at a pass but was interfered with, Barberton recovering the ball. Stoner picked up a fumble on the one-yard line. Heyman fumble and Miller recovered. Barberton got the ball on downs and punted to Stoner. Heyman punted and the ball was recovered at the other end of the field by Stoner, who turned the play into a touchdown. Goal was kicked.

Barberton kicked to Heyman. Massillon punted to Barberton. Barberton punted to Massillon. Barberton, after interfering with a forward recovered the ball. Massillon received the ball on downs. Heyman punted and Wells recovered the ball back of the goal posts making another touchdown. Try at goal failed.

Massillon kicked off, the ball going back of the goal line. It was brought in and put in play by Barberton. Time was called for the second quarter. Score: Massillon 22; Barberton 6.

Barberton kicked to Kester, Miller, Heyman and Kester working together tore up the Barberton line for heavy gains. From this time on the Barberton line weakened, several players having taken time out to recover wind and receive rub downs. Barberton added to Massillon’s fun by being penalized for off side playing. Miller hammered the line and broke away for a touchdown. Goal was kicked.

Barberton kicked to Wagoner. Kester fumbled to Barberton; Barberton punted and recovered the ball. It was here that Barberton made its last score. Having worked themselves into position for a placekick, Chismell booted the ball over.

Another fumble on the kickoff, Barberton recovering. Rider received a forward when the ball became Massillon’s again. Rudy recovered Heyman’s punt and ran for a touchdown but was out of bounds when within a foot of the goal. Kester made a touchdown on bucking. The third quarter closed. Score: Massillon, 33; Barberton 9.

Barberton kicked to Heyman, who returned the kick. The ball was set in play in the center of the field. Punts were exchanged, Barberton seeing the hopelessness of its winning. The playing became loosened until Heyman made a touchdown. Goal was kicked. Time was called for the last quarter. The score ended with 30 points in Massillon’s favor. Barberton had 9.

BARBERTON
WANTED TO PLAY THE GAME
And They Got All the Game They Wanted.

THE FINAL SCORE WAS 11 TO 0

Through “Mud, Blood, Slush,” the Knights of the Gridiron
Chase the Pigskin Over Line for Two Touchdowns
Sonnhalter Makes First Touchdown

Barberton wanted to play Saturday. Rain or no rain, they had come to Massillon with the intention of playing football, and they were not to be disappointed. So, while the heavens wept for them, they were walloped about the field to the tune of 11 to 0.

The team from Barberton arrived on the 2:30 o’clock interurban car, and were escorted by Managers Gorrell and Moody to the gymnasium to change their habiliment for something better fitted for the gridiron. They had not been in the gymnasium very long when the rain began to fall, and once it had begun it didn’t seem to know when to stop. The lightning flashed and the thunder roared while the wind blew a tornado from the west, and the players lounged on the door mats at the gym and wished that it would dry up.

After a half hour or more of steady downpour it let up sufficiently for Coach Fugate to make an examination trip to the high school grounds. Upon returning he said that the field was in no condition at all to play and that he would not take the team on the field. The Barberton aggregation showed their evident displeasure at this. They had come here to play and they wanted a game. Finally Massillon was prevailed upon, and after a council of war it was decided to give them a game. They got all the game they wanted, it is to be hoped.

Under rows of dripping trees the two teams trooped from the gym to the grounds, where
they found a generous crowd of loyal supporters waiting for them under the welcome protection of umbrellas. Here and there the field resembled a miniature lake, and one lad of tender years was seen behind the sidelines with a fishing pole over one shoulder, though he did not say what use he intended to make of it.

Massillon kicked off to Barberton. After vainly attempting to make their ten yards, Barberton punted, allowing Massillon to recover the ball. Massillon gained steadily, and was soon within several yards of the goal. Barberton’s coach, who was getting somewhat excited, forgot where he belonged and had to be ordered off the field of play. Massillon needed but a few yards for a touchdown. The ball was given to Captain Sonnhalter, who came tearing through right tackle and the biggest mud puddle on the field, and made the first touchdown of the season within less than ten minutes of play. Portmann attempted goal but failed.

Barberton kicked off to Massillon who recovered. The ball was given to Custer, left half, who made a long gain around right end. Again and again Custer made this play, resulting with long gains almost every time. Sonnhalter and Heyman both carried the ball for gains. Barber caught a pretty forward. Time was called for the end of the first period, Massillon’s ball, second down, and a yard and a half to gain.

After the three minute intermission the teams again faced each other on the slippery field. Several plays were called, and the ball neared the goal. When within a few feet of the line, Massillon fumbled the ball and Barberton recovered it. Barberton made a long punt, and Miller fell on the ball.

Massillon returned the punt and Barberton repeated, Miller making a fair catch. Massillon lost the ball to Barberton on downs. On Barberton’s first play, Heyman got through and tackled his man behind the line. Barberton punted; Sonnhalter catching. Time was called for the first half. Score 5 to 0.

During the ten minute intermission Thompson and his worthy rooters made the field ring with songs and yells that could chill the blood of an Apache Indian.

At the beginning of the second half Barberton kicked off to Massillon, Sonnhalter catching. Up and down the field slipped and splashed the pigskin chasers, Sonnhalter, Heyman and Custer handling the ball for long gains time and again. Keeton, who only handled the ball once, made a big gain around right end. When within about three yards of the goal, Heyman took the ball for an off tackle buck, making the second and last touchdown of the game. Heyman kicked goal.

During the remainder of the game but little of interest happened. Barberton had to be penalized several times for pushing, obviously because they were not acquainted with the new rules.

As the clouds were gathering for another shower and the darkness was becoming “visible,” the timekeeper blew his horn and the game came to an end.

MASSILLON HIGH
BEATS BARBERTON
The Local Boys Score Three Touchdowns
VISITORS PLAY A GOOD GAME
Barberton was Never Dangerously Near Massillon’s Goal
Every Member of Massillon High
Played to Win from Start to Finish
A Financial Loss

Friday afternoon, before a moderately large crowd, Massillon High gave an exhibition of what it can do against a team of its own size and weight.  Much delay was experienced in starting the game, as the greater part of the team did not arrive at the grounds, being delayed by a derailed car at the square.  The crowd grew quite impatient and Manager Tucker finally started after the team on foot but happily met the car and the game finally started about 4:30.

Barberton kicked off to Massillon; the ball was fumbled and no advance was made; Barberton in turn made a fumble.  The Massillon boys now made great gains toward south goal, Burkhart hitting the line for fine advances, and the home team went steadily up the field.  The ball was given to Albright who made a magnificent run for thirty-five yards.  On the next down Burkhart received the ball and went around left end for a fifty yard run, making the first touchdown.  Albright failed on goal.  On the second kickoff Albright secured the ball at the twenty yard line and reached the thirty-five yard line before going down.  Massillon now played straight football going through the line at will.   When the thirty-five yard line w as reached a fumble was made but Merwin secured the ball; the fumble was repeated, Barberton getting the ball but losing it directly by a blocked punt.  Line plunges were made and Albright scored the second touchdown but Merwin failed on goal.

On the third kick Massillon made a good gain but time for the first half was called, Massillon having possession of the ball at the thirty-five yard line.

At the end of the second half the visitors were given a chance to score by receiving the kickoff.  The ball was not caught until it reached the five yard line and was only advanced to the twenty yard line.  Barberton now made a nice twenty-five yard run but went outside of bounds.  The run was made by Booth, the opposing left half.  The visitors fumbled, Albright making a fifteen yard gain.  Massillon steadily pushed down the field, Kirchhofer making the third touchdown.  Goal was not kicked.  Massillon High kicked off, the ball going outside at the thirty-five yard line.  When the ball was brought back Massillon was forced to punt.  Booth again made a magnificent run of forty yards but was “laid out” when tackled and time was called.  The game was a good clean one and few accidents were in evidence.

The line-up was a follows:
Massillon                Position               Barberton
Hollander, Smith        L.E.                 Fuergeson
Snyder
Jones                        L.T.                   Sneddon

Merwin                     R.E.           Booth, Boden

Fuergeson
Albright                     L.H.                     Witwer
Burkhart                   R.H.

(capt.) Rowe

Time – Two fifteen minute halves.

Stewart and Blinn, of Barberton, alternated as referee and umpire.
Timekeepers – Julius Wittmann and Jack Shreve.
Head Linesman – Bast.

The Massillon boys put up a good, fast game and gave the crowd a fine exhibition of the game.  Every man played his position in fine style and the team played together well.

Burkhart as a ground gainer surprised everybody, going through the line and around end at will apparently, while Albright tore around end for great gains.  Kirchhofer played a hard plunging game and McFarren put up a good fast game.  Merwin played a fast game while “Pete” Hollander was a star in the first half, Smith doing his best in the second.  The work of Kaylor was one of the features.
