Noteworthy Items: Having lost to Mansfield 16-12, Massillon then defeated unbeaten Canton McKinley 6-0. Mansfield also had a loss, in the season opener, to unranked Akron South, 34-27. So the sportswriters opted for defending state champion Massillon to repeat. Mansfield was coached by former Massillon mentor Augie Morningstar. Cincinnati sportswriters, of course, claimed there was a “generally recognized bias” against Cincinnati-area teams in the final A.P. voting, while pushing unbeaten Cincinnati Purcell for the title. But two years later, Massillon played home-and-home with Cincinnati Elder, a regular Purcell opponent, and defeated them both times by scores of 42-6 and 32-0. Bias anyone?
