Tom Stacy is in his second tour of duty at AU. Stacy is AU’s quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator.

Stacy came to Ashland with Lee Owens and was AU’s offensive coordinator in 2004. He left AU after that one season and served as the head coach at two high schools – storied Massillon in Massillon, Ohio, and Green High School. At Massillon, he was 26-11 in three years and in 2005, Massillon was the Division I state runner-up with a 13-2 record. Stacy coached at Green from 2008-10. He returned to Ashland in 2011.

From 1995-2003, Stacy was an assistant under Owens at the University of Akron. He served as the quarterbacks coach and tutored two of the most successful quarterbacks in school history – Charlie Frye and Butchie Washington. In 2000, Akron was the co-champion of the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division.

Stacy has had similar success with quarterbacks at AU. In 2012, Taylor Housewright flourished as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. He was the GLIAC Player of the Year, a first-team All-American and a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy. The Eagles were sixth in the nation in pass efficiency in 2012 and 11th in scoring offense.

In 2016, Travis Tarnowski became Ashland’s all-time leader in touchdown passes with 80.

Prior to coaching with the Zips, Stacy held a number of high school coaching positions. He was the head coach at Shelby from 1991-94, where he guided the Whippets to a 24-16 record. He was the offensive coordinator at Galion (1983-86), Lancaster (1987) and Massillon (1988-90).

Stacy is a 1981 graduate of Bowling Green. The AU assistant coach played baseball at Bowling Green, where one of his teammates was Orel Hershiser.

The Massillon Tigers’ 25th head football coach will be officially named on Wednesday at a special Massillon Board of Education meeting at 9 a.m. at the district offices on Oak Ave. NE, but not before some lively debate on which of the two finalists should get the job.
It is believed former Tiger assistant and current Ashland University quarterbacks coach Tom Stacy edged out Wadsworth head coach Greg Dennison for the post.
Stacy and Dennison were the two finalists for the job, vacated with the resignation of Rick Shepas late last month. Both were interviewed by the board of education and Massillon Schools Superintendent Al Hennon
in separate 90 minute sessions on Friday afternoon.

Joe Shaheen Commentary
By the time most of you read this, Tom Stacy will already have been officially anointed  as the new coach of the Massillon Tigers.
The formal announcement was to take place at 9 this morning at a special Massillon Board of Education meeting. Superintendent Al Hennen will recommend the board present Stacy with a three year contract and that’s when things could – but we hope won’t – get interesting.
Word is one board member who favored Greg Dennison over Stacy will either cast a “no” vote or may not show up at all. My guess is cooler heads will prevail and the entire board will unite to show its support for Stacy whose job will be tough enough without having to look over his shoulder.

Former Tiger assistant returns as head coach

The names are familiar to anyone with even a passing knowledge of Massillon Tigers football.
Paul Brown, Chuck Mather, Leo Strang, Earle Bruce, Bob Commings.
Tom Stacy joined that exclusive fraternity when he was officially named the 25th head coach of the Massillon Tigers during a special Board of Education Meeting, Wednesday.
Stacy, a Tiger assistant under Lee Owens in the late 1980’s was given a three-year contract in a unanimous 4-0 vote by the school board. Board member Vicki Becherucci was on vacation. “I’m thrilled, I’m excited. I’m honored,” Stacy said. “I can assure you of one thing, they selected a Tiger. I can assure you that right now.”
Stacy, who leaves his post as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ashland University, succeeds Rick Shepas, who held the job for seven years, highlighted by on undefeated regular season and two regional championships.
The Shepas era also saw three 4-6 seasons, including the last two campaigns, and plenty of off-the-field controversy. His time at Massillon was marked by a growing rift in the community and in the Tigers support organizations, an issue Stacy addressed in his remarks to the Board of Education and a standing-room-only crowd in attendance.
“It’s not going to happen until this community – all of us – get behind this football program again.” Stacy said. “That’s what its going to be all about.
“We can talk about goals all we want. But we’ve got to come together as a community and tthat’s going to be a real important part of the progress that we make here.”
Stacy will not hold down the dual roles of head football coach and athletic director, as had been the case in recent coaching regimes.
Superintendent Al Hennon will recommend Assistant Athletic Director Jeff Thornberry for the latter job in the coming weeks. Instead, Stacy will be Dean of Students at Washington High School.
“It’s an assistant-principal-type situation,” Hennon explained. “That was Tom’s wishes, too. He has to be comfortable in what he is doing in his day job. But he will be totally responsible for the football program, totally responsible. Absolutely, I don’t think he would be here it that didn’t come across in our conversations.”
