1959 Booster Club President

Walt Sorg

President Sorg, and the club’s executive board, set a membership goal of 2500. He also assigned three board members to each game who were responsible for any pep activities planned for that game. During the year, the president, and other club members, appeared in three skits at student rallies. The year’s highlight was an impromptu march by the students through the downtown area following a rally at WHS. The students and band were led by president Sorg dressed in Elwood Kammer’s full length ‘raccoon’ coat. This was a very active year for President Sorg and the Booster Club.

1959 was truly a banner year for Massillon Tiger football. The ’59 Tigers were a talented, tenacious and dedicated group as they pounded 10 opponents on their way to state and national scholastic championships. The domination shown by this team’s 431-49 point ratio ranked it as one of the best teams in Massillon history. Coach Strang was selected by the AP and UPI as Ohio’s coach of the year. The battle cry “MASSILLON WILL SHINE IN ’59” came true.

570 enthusiastic and proud fans attended the annual WHS football banquet in the new high school cafeteria. In addition to all the team awards, the WHS athletic department showed its appreciation to the Booster Club by presenting all past presidents with a handsome plaque. Cleveland radio and TV announcer, Jimmy Dudley was the principal speaker. Dr. Robert Immel, Board of Education president, served as toastmaster.
