Harold Shanabrook
Harold Shanabrook became the first Tiger Booster Club president to serve a Tiger head coach other than Paul Brown. New Tiger head coach, William “Bud” Houghton, was hired when Coach Brown left to become head coach at Ohio State University. Coach Houghton, who had served as an assistant under Brown, continued the Tiger success by leading the Tigers to a seventh consecutive state championship in 1941 and extending the Tiger undefeated streak to 43 games.
“Massillon Day” at the Ohio State – Wisconsin football game was one of the club’s most exciting activities of the year. The Tiger Swing Band performed at half time and saluted the two head coaches, Ohio State’s Paul Brown and Wisconsin’s Harry Stuhldreher, both of whom were former Tiger players. Through the efforts of club president Shanabrook and Luther Emery, a reception was held in downtown Columbus at the Desher-Wallick Hotel for the Massillon fans to meet with coaches Brown, Stuhldreher and Houghton
The Booster Club’s annual banquet and program was held at Washington High School with a crowd of 1,000 in attendance. Dinner was served in the cafeteria and to quests seated on the auditorium stage Tickets for the program held, in the auditorium after dinner were only sold to club members. Lynn Waldorf, Northwestern University coach was main speaker. Three days after the banquet, December 7, 1941, Japanese forces attacked the U S Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands the United States was now at war and a greater victory had to be won!!!
