1949 Booster Club President

Bill Snyder

On March 27th, the largest player response (99) in WHS history greeted 2nd year Coach Chuck Mather to start spring football practice. The coaching staff would cut that number to 60 by the end of fall practice. The Booster Club’s spring agenda opened with a “Meet the Team Night” meeting and closed with the annual “Smoker” after the varsity/senior game at the Elks Club.

Coach Mather’s masterful use and knowledge of the T-formation once again guided the Tigers to another state championship, but it was great defense that clinched that title, as the Tigers defeated McKinley 6-0 in the season’s final game. Once again McKinley had been unbeaten and ranked first in the state.

The Booster Club, under the leadership of Bill Snyder increased activities and kept the enthusiasm high all during McKinley week. Club members organized a gigantic student and adult send-off of the team buses on their way to Canton’s Fawcett stadium Saturday morning. The annual parade and bon fire was a great success as usual. The season officially closed, with the Booster Club’s annual football banquet before a capacity crowd at the Washington High School auditorium.
