1973 Booster Club President

Gene Boerner

Coach Bob Commings’ final Tiger team finished 8-1-1 and second in the regional computer ratings, 5.5 points out of first place, at a time when only the top team qualified for the playoffs. The gut wrenching 21-0 loss to Canton McKinley was the difference. The season’s highlight occurred on September 7th when the Tigers defeated Cleveland Cathedral Latin 22-0 for the school’s 500th victory. The second consecutive win over Upper Arlington was another reward for Coach Commings’ last Tiger team.

On December 15th, Bob Commings was named the new head football coach at the University of Iowa. This news came just one week prior to the annual WHS football banquet. As a result, the banquet was not only a tribute to the 1973 Tigers but it was also a farewell to one of the most dynamic coaches in Massillon’s long history. President Boerner had a most memorable and historic year He and his fellow officers arranged a great McKinley parade and rally. The Booster Club presented a huge autographed “500 Wins” sign to Washington High School at the banquet.

When Massillonions look back on the “Bob Commings’ Years”, they will remember that he brought the Tiger football program out of some troublesome times and back to respectability. “Uncle Bob” will always be remembered for his great defensive mind and his honesty, commitment and love for Massillon football.
